چکیده

Mortuary analysis is used for discerning social differentiation and elucidating models of sociopolitical organization. Previous research among the Classic Maya has often been ambiguous and even misleading, as evidenced by studies where similar data yielded divergent conclusions. A comprehensive and unreported database (683 Copán individuals) forms the core of our multivariate, predictive model, incorporating numerous indicators of social differentiation (e.g., grave goods, grave space, position and treatment, age, sex, paleopathology, paleonutrition, structure association, and settlement pattern). We define links between behavioral remains, inform competing models of socio-political organization, and develop a model for addressing social differentiation in areas with limited data.
